Non-Major Curriculum Roadmap

Many universities in Korea and abroad provide students with diverse options for choosing majors through school systems or double-major programs, but Handong Global University’s non-major admission system is regarded as a step further—an innovative educational model.

At Handong Global University, all freshmen are admitted without restrictions to a particular major or department, offering an environment where they can explore their career paths more freely and in greater depth. The primary purpose of this system is not only to broaden the range of choices but also to help each student discover and reflect on their own aptitudes and interests before selecting a major.

In fact, many students begin to seriously consider their career paths only after entering university, during which they often discover new possibilities. To actively support this process, Handong systematically operates a variety of major exploration programs, mentoring systems, and extracurricular activities, thereby providing students with multifaceted support to choose the most suitable major and grow.

HGU's non-major admission system embodies the philosophy of student-centered education, offering the best opportunity for students to embark on a meaningful academic journey based on their unique talents and passions.

Major Selection Roadmap

 Before Admission

Before admission, students are provided with opportunities to experience Handong Global University and campus life in advance through various programs. Through the G-IMPACT program held in the summer, they can directly explore different academic fields, discover their personal interests, and consider the direction of their future careers. In addition, after being admitted, programs such as the HanST freshman orientation and the Preparatory College are offered, allowing students to experience classes with professors and become familiar with the university’s teaching methods before officially beginning their studies. These pre-admission experiences greatly help freshmen understand Handong’s educational philosophy and learning environment in advance, preparing them for a smooth transition into university life.

 Freshman

After admission, students can freely take introductory major courses offered in the first and second semesters to assist in exploring their academic interests. They can also attend information sessions hosted by various departments to address questions or concerns they may have. In addition, by participating in SAA (Student Academic Assistant) counseling, students receive guidance and coaching from senior peers, further supporting their decision-making process in choosing a major. At the end of the second semester, students select their desired major and are assigned to it with minimal restrictions.

Furthermore, throughout their first year, freshmen participate in various activities with “Freshman Mentors,” who help them adjust smoothly to campus life. As senior students, these mentors support freshmen in all aspects of daily life and assist them in becoming naturally familiar with the school and community. In addition, freshmen are organized into small groups where they build bonds with peers and experience growth within the community through regular team activities. Each team is guided by a faculty advisor, who provides counsel on academic, career, and faith-related concerns. Moreover, by completing courses in faith and worldview, students lay the foundation for integrating academics and life based on holistic thinking and a Christian worldview—the core of Handong University’s educational philosophy.

 Sophomore

From the second year onward, students begin their full-scale major studies based on the major they selected at the end of their first year. After exploring and preparing through various introductory courses during the first year, they now engage more deeply with advanced major courses, acquiring both core theories and practical skills in their chosen field. Following the structured curriculum of each major, students participate not only in theoretical learning but also in practice-oriented classes, projects, and team-based assignments, gaining opportunities to develop both academic depth and practical competence. Furthermore, through close academic interaction with professors and connections with peers and seniors within their major, students can refine their career plans and actively cultivate their abilities, making this period a significant turning point in their academic journey.

For students admitted without a declared major, course registration can be designed in various ways depending on their individual academic plans and career paths.
